Turkish Airlines Lost Property: Recovering a Suit Through a Consular Power of Attorney

Finding out that an airline has located your missing property is reassuring. But what happens when the item is in Istanbul and you are already back in another country? For one South African traveler, the challenge was not finding his lost suit. It was arranging the documentation required for someone else to collect it.

A Two-Piece Suit Left on Flight TK043

On 5 September 2026, Chris contacted Ana Kurye about a suit bag left on a Turkish Airlines flight. The bag contained a two-piece suit and was being held by Turkish Airlines International Lost Property at Istanbul Airport. The item had already been confirmed as found. Chris's connecting flight schedule made it difficult to visit the Lost Property office himself. He needed to understand whether an authorized representative could collect the bag before the holding period became a problem.

Why the Holding Office Matters

Lost property at an airport may be handled by different organizations. An item forgotten onboard a Turkish Airlines aircraft is not necessarily managed under the same procedures as an item found inside a public airport terminal. In Chris's case, the responsible office was Turkish Airlines International Lost Property. This distinction mattered because the collection requirements involved consular authorization. Before booking a courier, travelers should identify the exact organization holding the item and obtain its instructions.

Arranging a Power of Attorney from South Africa

Chris contacted the Turkish consular authorities in Pretoria. The documentation process required communication with the consulate and preparation of a Turkish-language power of attorney. He needed to include the relevant lost-property reference and the authorized representative's details. The process took time. During September, Chris followed up with the consular office several times. Communication delays and appointment arrangements meant the authorization could not be completed immediately.

Ana Kurye remained in contact with him and helped clarify the information needed for collection. On October 7, Chris confirmed that he had received the power of attorney. He then worked on forwarding the documents for the collection process.

Can Someone Else Collect Your Turkish Airlines Lost Property?

A representative may be able to assist, but the requirements depend on the airline's responsible office and the specific circumstances. Travelers should confirm:

  • Where the item is being held
  • The applicable lost-property reference
  • Whether collection by an authorized representative is permitted
  • Which form of power of attorney is accepted
  • Whether originals or copies are required
  • Whether identity documents or flight records are needed
  • Any time limits affecting collection

Do not assume that a simple signed authorization letter will be sufficient for every airline or lost-property department. Equally, a requirement from one case should not be presented as a universal rule.

Why Chris Chose Collection Instead of Waiting

Chris expected to pass through Istanbul again in December. Initially, he considered collecting the suit during that trip. However, he had limited time between flights, and the holding office could not guarantee continued storage beyond its normal period. He chose to pursue earlier collection through Ana Kurye rather than rely on a later connection. The case illustrates why checking retention periods is important, even after lost property has been located.

What Happened After Authorization?

Once the power-of-attorney process had progressed, Ana Kurye coordinated the recovery and onward shipping arrangements. By October 12, the suit had reached the warehouse and packaging had been completed for the next stage of transportation toward South Africa. Chris later posted a public Google review praising Ana Kurye's support, communication and handling of the process. Need Assistance with Airline Lost Property?

If Turkish Airlines or another lost-property office has confirmed possession of your belongings, Ana Kurye can review the collection requirements and available courier options. Begin with your reference number, airline, item description and current country of residence. Important: Ana Kurye is an independent service provider. It is not the official Turkish Airlines Lost Property department or Istanbul Airport authority. The relevant organization decides which documents it will accept.
