How a Lost iPhone Was Collected from Istanbul Airport After the Passenger Left Turkey

An iPhone held by IGA / Istanbul Airport Lost & Found needed an authorized local collection after its owner, Derek Fan, had left Turkey. This case follows the release process from consular authorization to collection and overseas delivery.

Recovered iPhone held at the Istanbul Airport Lost and Found counter

What happens when you leave Turkey before collecting your lost phone?

Derek lost his iPhone while transiting through Istanbul Airport and was already in the United States when the recovery arrangements were being made. The phone was held under IGA / Istanbul Airport Lost & Found procedures.

Having an item located and having it released are separate stages. For Derek, the next step was to coordinate the documentation that would allow a representative to collect it at the airport.

Why authorization was part of this case

On 6 September 2026, Derek reported an appointment at the Turkish Consulate in Miami for a Power of Attorney. He was also awaiting the required GDPR / KVKK-related Lost & Found documentation. He completed the consular authorization on 8 September.

This describes Derek's particular release process. The required documents can vary depending on the item and the Lost & Found record. Travellers should confirm the current release requirements for their individual case before arranging a collection.

Collection from IGA Lost & Found

Ana Kurye went to Istanbul Airport on 9 September. Airport verification and release procedures were completed, and the iPhone was successfully handed over for collection.

The responsible Lost & Found authority in this case was IGA / Istanbul Airport Lost & Found. The authorization enabled local assistance while Derek remained abroad.

Recovered iPhone at Ana Kurye before international return

Preparing a recovered phone for international shipping

After collection, the phone was prepared for international return with DHL. Purchase or order documentation was requested where possible to support the shipment paperwork, and the phone was declared as a used personal item. Insurance and value documentation were also discussed before the package was handed to DHL.

Collection approval does not itself establish shipping eligibility. A phone's battery and the chosen route can affect carrier handling requirements, so those details need to be checked for the actual shipment.

Customs and import charges in the destination country

Derek's shipment experienced a destination-country customs delay involving possible duties or taxes. A completed airport release does not remove the separate destination customs process.

Customs rules and import charges are determined by the destination-country authorities. Ana Kurye cannot decide or guarantee those assessments.

Final outcome: the iPhone was received

Derek confirmed receipt on 16 September 2026. His Google review on 28 September also described the assistance with claiming and shipping the device home.

The case shows how airport release, local collection and overseas transport can be coordinated when the necessary authorization is accepted. It does not mean that every record follows the same document requirements.
